Mackinac Island

A Timeless Retreat with "Undiscovered America TV"

Hidden amidst the sparkling waters of Lake Huron lies a gem that remains untouched by the hustle of modern-day life: Mackinac Island. With "Undiscovered America TV," we journeyed to this car-free haven, where the clip-clop of horse-drawn carriages replaces the hum of engines, and historic charm resonates in every corner.

From the moment you arrive by ferry, you're transported to an era where time seems to stand still. The island's commitment to preserving its rich history and natural beauty has ensured that every path, structure, and vista remains as enchanting as it did centuries ago.

A highlight of any Mackinac visit is the Grand Hotel. Boasting the world's longest porch, this iconic hotel invites guests to experience luxury that pays homage to a bygone era. Afternoons here are best spent enjoying high tea, taking in panoramic views of the Straits of Mackinac.

Exploring Mackinac by bicycle is a treat. The island's perimeter offers an 8-mile scenic loop, delivering breathtaking views of lighthouses, rugged coastlines, and the expansive blue of Lake Huron. Venture inland, and you'll find lush forests, tranquil trails, and hidden spots that whisper tales from the past.

No trip to Mackinac is complete without indulging in its world-famous fudge. Wander the quaint streets of Mackinac's downtown, and the rich aroma of chocolate being handcrafted will beckon you to the numerous fudge shops.

For those seeking solace in nature, Mackinac does not disappoint. With over 80% of the island being a state park, countless trails wind through serene forests, leading explorers to ancient limestone formations and breathtaking overlooks.

We ended our journey by taking in a sunset at Arch Rock, a natural limestone arch rising 146 feet above the ground. As the sun cast a golden hue over the waters and the island, it felt like a fitting finale to our Mackinac adventure.

Mackinac Island is not just a destination; it's an experience. A place where you can disconnect from the digital and reconnect with nature, history, and yourself. Dive deeper into the magic of Mackinac with "Undiscovered America TV" as we bring to life the tales, traditions, and treasures of this timeless island retreat.

Ever wondered why some highways have odd numbers while others are even? The U.S. Interstate System isn’t just a tangle of roads—it follows a clever naming convention designed to make navigation easier. Odd-numbered interstates run north to south , with lower numbers in the west (think I-5 on the West Coast) and higher numbers in the east (like I-95 on the East Coast). Even-numbered interstates, on the other hand, run east to west , starting low in the south (I-10 along the Gulf Coast) and increasing as you head north (I-90 near the Canadian border). Then there are the three-digit interstates , which are either loops (like I-275 around major cities) or spurs that lead into downtown areas (like I-395 into Washington, D.C.). This structured system, born from the 1956 Federal-Aid Highway Act , ensures travelers can easily navigate the country’s vast road network. Whether you're planning a cross-country adventure or just decoding the road signs on your daily commute, now you know the method behind the mileage!
